2011-2012 Daily Schedule
Morning Meeting & Calendar
Morning Meeting is everyone's favorite part of the day! There are four components to Morning Meeting: Greeting, Sharing, Activity, and Morning Message. I base our Morning Meeting off of the information I learned at the Responsive Classroom workshops that I have attended. Through our greetings and activities, we review math and language AKS and work on our speaking and listening skills. We also work on reading and writing in the morning message component. It really is a wonderful and educational time of the day!
Calendar is also a great time of day. During calendar I encourage students to collaborate with their peers and think critically about math concepts. We may work with money, tally marks and graphs, time, place value, or number sense (just to name a few things). It is a great way to constantly review and enhance the first grade math AKS.

ESOL/Social Science
ESOL is a time when our wonderful ESOL teachers will take English language learners to work on vocabulary and English. We all teach Social Science during this time of the day. Students who go to ESOL will receive their Social Science instruction with their ESOL teacher. Students who stay in the classroom with receive their Social Science instruction with me!
Balanced Literacy
At Meadowcreek Elementary we like to take a balanced literacy approach to reading and writing instruction. In order to be true to the balanced literacy approach and to differentiate by providing a variety of methods of instruction, this time of the day may include any of the following types of literacy instruction:
-Reader's Workshop
-Just Read
-Daily 5 (independent reading and writing activities)
-Spelling
-Poetry
-Language Arts Instruction
-One-on-one conferences
-Small guided group instruction
-Read-Aloud
Unfortunately we can't do everything every day, but we try our best to fit as much in as we can!

Read-All
Read-All is a program that our Reading Specialist (Mrs. French) uses when she comes to our classroom. Students are grouped by ability level and are given a book to read each day with a corresponding comprehension/writing activity. Students are also given a take-home sheet which summarizes the story they read. Read-All is dedicated to helping students build vocabulary and fluency in their reading.
Guided Math
When it comes to math, I take a differentiated approach! There are several ways I instruct math to keep things interesting and provide an opportunity for everyone to succeed:
-Small Guided Group Instruction
-Math Workshops with collaborative partner work
-Group Games
-Partner Games
-Whole group activities/games
-Independent activities
Your child will be exposed to a variety of math instruction, ensuring that there will always be a way for each child to be successful!

Writer's Workshop
This year we'll be ending the day with Writer's Workshop every day. This time will be composed of three parts:
1. Mini-lesson - Students meet me on the carpet for quick writing instruction
2. Workshop time - Students work on their writing and confer with me/peers.
3. Sharing - Students share what they worked on.
I think this will be a fun and exciting way to end our day!
